About us

Our Mission

The Minority Bar Foundation of Western New York was formed in 2004 to advance education and scholarship in the field of law. We work to ensure continued minority representation in the profession and empower these future leaders to help shape the justice system in Western New York and throughout New York State.

Professional guidance, education programs and financial assistance with LSAT preparation are provided to students at all levels. Additionally, University at Buffalo School of Law students are mentored with resources to excel at passing the New York State Bar exam. The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization.

Statement of Activities

The Foundation believes that an essential component of efforts to increase law school diversity is to provide information, inspiration, and financial support to prospective law students of color.

The Foundation provides professional guidance, educational programs and financial assistance through grants to students beginning in college through law school. Grants are available to assist with the cost of preparing for and taking the Law School Admissions Test and the New York State Bar Exam.  In addition, the Foundation supports program activities beginning at the high school level to expose students from under represented populations to a legal career and to provide guidance in entering and successfully navigating the law school process.

The Foundation seeks to advance the diversity of the legal community through securing scholarships by way of an annual dinner, solicitation of members of the legal and business community for scholarship donations and scholarship sponsorship, along with hosting other programs of a charitable nature. Since its inception, the Foundation has provided more than $200,000 in grants to deserving students. Beneficiaries of the work of the foundation are practicing attorneys in Buffalo and throughout New York State in both the public and private sectors of the law. From time to time, the Foundation works in collaboration with the Minority Bar Association of Western New York and other bar associations on various projects related to our goal of advancing diversity in the legal profession at all levels.

The Foundation strives to strengthen the capacity of the minority legal community by supporting aspiring minority law students to become members of the bar, as we as a community seek to assist all people in the region to have equal access to justice.

A new, re-born Buffalo is emerging after years of economic struggle with a vision to succeed against all odds. The Foundation will strive to contribute to this vibrant makeover by providing support to strengthen the capacity of the minority legal community in its efforts to assist all people in this region to exercise their rights, either as individuals or as members of a group. We need and appreciate your support in helping make that happen.
